Do you want to have a direct say in how your city is run?
YESDEMPLYMOUTH is a campaign dedicated to giving Plymouthonians the opportunity to vote on whether they want a Directly Elected Mayor or not. With your support, we can trigger a referendum in May 2026, giving Plymouth the choice.
A DEM is another way of saying Directly Elected Leader. Our Lord Mayor, a separate office, would stay in place. A Directly Elected Leader (DEM) would replace the current position of indirectly elected leader of the council.
NOW IS THE TIME BECAUSE…
- Councillors choose our leader, not us ! Let’s decide if we want to directly elect our leader.
- Major cities have been transformed by their DEMs. Like Manchester & Bristol, let’s have this chance as well.
- 55% of English people now have a Directly Elected Mayor. The new Labour government wants more DEMs.
- Plymouth ranks amongst the worst cities for poverty. Let’s have the opportunity to change our city governance.
- Our city is decaying without a clear vision. The city centre, potholes, and weeds… we can do better.
